What this page is
A plain description of a method: how to place Bitcoin on a halving-cycle coordinate and how to compare that coordinate with earlier cycles. It is research and education. It is not financial advice, not a trading signal, and not a forecast of any price, top or bottom.
A cycle day is a coordinate, not a forecast.
The halving mechanism, briefly
Bitcoin's protocol pays a block subsidy to the miner of each block. Every 210,000 blocks the subsidy is cut in half. The halving is set by block height, not by calendar date, so its date is only known once the block is mined. Four halvings have happened:
| # | Block | Date (UTC) | Subsidy per block | Calendar days to next halving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 210,000 | 2012-11-28 | 50 → 25 BTC | 1,319 |
| 2 | 420,000 | 2016-07-09 | 25 → 12.5 BTC | 1,402 |
| 3 | 630,000 | 2020-05-11 | 12.5 → 6.25 BTC | 1,440 |
| 4 | 840,000 | 2024-04-20 | 6.25 → 3.125 BTC | - |
The halving changes new supply. It does not set demand, and it does not set price.
What is a cycle day
A cycle day is the number of whole calendar days since the most recent halving. The same rule is applied to every earlier cycle, so "day N" means the same elapsed time after each halving.
Methodology
- Cycle day
- The halving day is Day 0. The count advances by one as each whole calendar day elapses. The same convention is used when aligning historical cycles. A cycle day is a coordinate, not a forecast.
- Halving-day price multiple
- Current Bitcoin price divided by the Bitcoin reference price recorded for the relevant halving day. A multiple of 2.0x means the displayed price is twice that reference price. It is not a return calculation (it ignores fees and anyone's own purchase price), and it is not a forecast.
- Comparisons
- Match the current day count to the same day count in the 2012, 2016 and 2020 cycles. Same count is not the same movie.
- Sources
- Name the actual feed per reading; never infer or invent a source.
- Evidence labels
- LIVE the reading comes from a current source response.
FALLBACK the value comes from a previously stored snapshot, not a fresh source response.
MODELED the value is an estimate produced by a model, not a directly observed event.
Fallback is not a fresh pull. Modeled is not observed. Each label must match the actual data path. - AI
- AI is never a market source. AI-generated text is not independently verified evidence.
Halving-day price multiple
The multiple describes relative height: how far the displayed price sits above or below the price on the halving day that opened the current cycle. It answers "where are we relative to that reference?" and nothing more. A high multiple does not mean a top is in; a low multiple does not mean a bottom is in. The reference price itself depends on which feed and which moment of the halving day is used, so the source is named next to the reading.
Comparing historical cycles
The 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024 cycles can be lined up by elapsed day count. Lined up this way, you can see what each earlier cycle looked like at the same day number. That is useful as context: it shows the range of past behaviour at a comparable point.
It is also where the method is easiest to misuse. The same count is not the same market. Each cycle ran under different liquidity, participation, regulation, market structure and size. Cycle lengths themselves differed (1,319, 1,402 and 1,440 calendar days between halvings). Only three complete cycles exist, which is a very small sample. Earlier cycles disagree with each other at many matching days; that disagreement is part of the evidence, not noise to hide.
Reading market context
Other readings add context around the cycle coordinate. Each one measures a different thing, and none of them explains every move:
- Sentiment (Fear & Greed Index): a mood reading built from several inputs. Not destiny.
- US spot Bitcoin ETF flows: one input among many. Their source and freshness must be stated; they are often shown from a fallback snapshot.
- Stablecoin liquidity: the size of dollar-pegged supply on chains; a broad backdrop, not a trigger.
- Derivatives (funding, open interest, liquidations): exchange-reported activity. Reported prints and liquidations are observations; liquidation clusters and whale-leverage figures are modeled estimates and are labeled that way.
- Macro (dollar index, rates, equities, gold, money supply): the wider environment Bitcoin trades in, with the provider named per reading.
Data sources and evidence labels
This page itself contains no live market data. It names the sources used for the cycle-day reading and its context so that each reading can be traced. None of these providers endorses or is affiliated with this page.
| Category | Named source | Usual label |
|---|---|---|
| Halving dates and block heights | Bitcoin blockchain (block headers; e.g. mempool.space) | Historical fact |
| Bitcoin spot price | Binance spot; CoinGecko | LIVE when fresh |
| US spot BTC ETF flows | Source: Farside Investors | LIVE or FALLBACK |
| Fear & Greed Index | Alternative.me | LIVE when fresh |
| Stablecoin liquidity | DefiLlama | LIVE when fresh |
| Derivatives prints and liquidations | Binance, Bybit, OKX (exchange-reported) | LIVE when fresh |
| Liquidation clusters, whale leverage | Estimated from exchange data | MODELED |
| Currency conversion | ExchangeRate-API | LIVE when fresh |
| Macro indicators | Named per reading; not inferred here | Per reading |
If a source is unavailable, the reading is either marked FALLBACK with its snapshot time or not shown. A modeled figure is never presented as an observed event.
Common reasoning traps
Patterns that show up often when halving cycles are discussed, each with a one-line correction.
- "Same day-count means same outcome."Correction: Matching elapsed days aligns timing, not liquidity, adoption, regulation or market structure; earlier cycles disagreed at the same count.
- "The halving means an immediate price rise."Correction: The halving changes the block subsidy; it does not set demand or the resulting price.
- "The multiple is a price target" / "a high or low multiple means the top or bottom is in."Correction: The multiple compares a displayed price with a historical reference; it describes relative height, not a destination or a confirmed extreme.
- "A Rainbow band is fair value, or a target."Correction: The Rainbow Chart is a historical visual map, not a valuation and not a future price level.
- "Fear & Greed or ETF flows explain every move."Correction: Each is one input among many; sentiment is a mood reading, and ETF flows need a named source and a freshness check.
- "A modeled liquidation cluster is an observed event."Correction: Modeled clusters and whale-leverage estimates are scenarios; reported prints and liquidations are labeled apart.
- "When indicators agree, it is certain."Correction: Indicators measure different things, can share the same blind spots, and cannot remove uncertainty.
Limitations
Historical comparisons cover a limited number of halving cycles, each under different market conditions. Aligning cycles by elapsed days does not control for liquidity, institutional participation, regulation, adoption or other changing factors.
The day count depends on the halving anchor and the day convention; small choices, such as which time zone marks a day boundary, can shift it by a day. The halving-day reference price depends on the feed and the moment used.
Market data can be delayed, unavailable or served from fallback snapshots. Modeled estimates are not equivalent to observed market events and can be wrong even when labeled. AI-generated responses may be template-based or model-backed and are not independently verified evidence.

Cycle Capsule template and index
A Cycle Capsule is a short, dated-by-cycle-day record of one real observation, kept with the evidence behind it and the strongest argument against it. Every bracket is filled from a real screen and a named source; nothing is invented. Using the template is never a duty to publish.
